- Drive to Nelson
- World of Wearable Art (WOW)
Another day on the road. The couple who run the Sails motel continued their very friendly service, running out in the rain to give us a couple of good coffee shops we could stop at on the way and fare welling us.
The drive to Nelson proved interesting… stack behind a truck for the first 100km, it seems many of the truck drivers refuse to use the slow vehicle sections of road, and given the roads are all windy and single lane, it's almost impossible to pass them! What makes passing all the more freakier, is the lanes are marked as overtaking almost always, even if it's a completely blind corner or there's a dip in the road you can't see from a distance - meaning the road markings are useless for determining how safe a section of road is for overtaking.
The weather conditions were rough for most of the drive with lashing winds and rain - we found out after arriving that it ended up snowing where we had come from, being odd for this time of year. Also on the drive had an older driver literally drive straight across into us without looking - even when hitting the horn and slamming on the brakes just continued to drive straight across into us - fortunately managed to swerve the car into an island bit and slam on the brakes to miss her - just (fortunately was a 50km zone, so weren't traveling too fast)!
Checked into our hotel in Nelson, which is fantastic - large "executive suite" which is very nice with spa and a very well appointed kitchen. The owners are fantastic and very friendly and helpful. Great hotel to just relax, which was fantastic having just driven through very windy rainy conditions on once again very windy roads (while the speed limit is 100km, some sections are almost entirely made up of 35km per hour corners).
Went to the World of Wearable art (WOW) museum, which displays a artistic clothing that's been submitted into their annual show (a huge annual modeling of weird art that can be worn) - Rachel loved it. Was only quite small with just 2 sections, but very well displayed and presented. It would seem the only criteria for submission is Weird - reminded me of the Circus de-soul (or whoever you say it…) costumes - but weirder - if that's possible. Also included as a side a car museum - which was actually very comprehensive with iconic top end vehicles ranging from early 1900's up till 2 years ago.
