- Waitomo Caves Adventure
Up early this-morning and off to Waitomo Caves - just under 2 hr drive, with not much traffic. As always, great scenery. Weather continues to work well for us, with this the first day of full rain - and were going underground! When we arrived, were informed that due to the heavy rains that have been experienced, the Tubing has flooded out so can't be run - so we're upgraded for free to the more adventurous one (normally about $80 more per person) the "Hogus Hoking Holes". This was fantastic, essentially caving & abseiling through underground streams rushing with water - a LOT of water, literally abseil through the streams, crawl under water and through rock tunnels with relatively deep water pouring through them. As well as being dropped through crevasses into water pool and also included some rock climbing, and much scrambling. About half way through, all lights are turned off & the glow worms shine up - quite impressive. This tour was rated as the highest "Rambo rating" along with one other. It was quite a contrast from what we had expected to be doing, but well worth it & a heap of fun.
Drove back to the motel, had take away pizza for dinner.
