- Brewery Tour & Dinner
Out to the Otago Peninsula today, mainly to see the Castle, built on the highest point. The castle grounds were reasonably average, but the location had a great view over the peninsula. We took a self guided tour through the castle, only built about 150 years ago but a man with a shady family background. The castle is interesting, it's not amazing - and is reasonably small for a castle, but given Rachel has never seen a castle before it was worthwhile - and some of the interior décor was impressive.
We drove arund a bit more of the peninsula, but it's really a lot more of the same, so ended up going back to the hotel, made lunch, then walked to a nearby cinema to see 500 days of summer. Following this, we had the Speights brewery tour, unfortunately there was a 1.5 hr break between the movie and the tour - and since the tour was nearby we decided to just stay in the area and walk over, the weather was bitterly cold and there was very little open in the area. Although we did find a free art museum in the center of town. This had an amazing building - it's a shame about the "art" (literally empty pizza box, ripped off card board on the walls, a home video of some guy holding his mum for a few minutes before repeating) out of the whole building, there was 1 piece of art that was slightly impressive (projected on 2 large screens, with heaps of spinning tops). It was a shame, as the building itself was fantastic.
After waiting the hour and a half out and freezing, we had the tour. Our guide was an older very loud and enthusiastic tour guide, the tour is well setup although by the end of it was still left somewhat confused about how the process actually worked. The end of the tour included beer tasting, which was effectively unlimited beer for 15 - 20 minutes where they open the bar up to the tour and you can try any beer as much as you want (we were the last group for the day, and half way through the tasting session we were invited to go to the souvenir shop before it closed - not surprisingly while there was unlimited free beer no one was interested)! Following the tour we had packaged a 3 course dinner which we expected to be average due to the total cost of the tour and dinner being quite reasonable ($120, but we received 10% discount because of the hotel we stayed at, 20% because it's NZ, and 30% as it could go onto the meal entertainment card!). However the dinner was HUGE and amazing, the garlic bread was literally half a loaf of bread! The food was great and abundant.
The price was amazing, $120 for both which included the tour & 3 course dinner, due to the hotel we stayed at, we received a 10% discount & then since it's NZ it's 20% less & as it was primarily a dinner, we could use the meal entertainment card - which is effectively another 30% off!
Following dinner - made the freezing walk back to the hotel. Enjoyed a hot shower to defrost - although had incident with the toothbrush which fell into the toilet!
