Lovewells vs The World
Today we packed up early and hit the road to Milford Sound...about 2.5 hours drive away. There is heaps to see on the road, and it is amazing how the landscape changes. We were surprised to see Avalanche warnings, because there was not very much snow, but later learned that they also have rock avalanches and tree avalanches. Some of the valleys have their shape because of avalanches.
At the Homer Tunnel we saw wild kea for the first time. One even jumped on the roof of a car I front of us! It was so funny.
We got to Milford nice and early, so we had time for a hot chocolate before we went on our cruise. The. We boarded the Pride of Milford and we off to explore the Sounds. We even had a buffet lunch on the boat while we looked at the scenery! We saw Dolphins, seals, big sea birds, Glacial cliffs and waterfalls. We went out to the edge of the Sounds (which are actually fjords, as they were formed by glaciers) and saw the Tasman Sea stretching away forever. Out there the boat caught a big swell and rocked and rolled, it was great!
On the way back from Milford we stopped to see lots of sights like Gunns camp with its crazy signs, the mirror lakes where we saw whio, and our favourite stop, The Chasm, where the water is so powerful it has made holes in the rocks. We also met 3 cheeky keas there, they got friendly with Nici and Baby Jaguar....one even tried to steal Nici! The other tourists loved watching this, but we were getting a bit worried for our softies. Still, it was very funny.
We got back to Te Anau in time to go to the Kepler Track, and walk a part of it for our next Kiwi Guardians challenge. Wow, what a beautiful place with all the beech trees and white rocks beside the lake. We found the challenge post hidden in a mossy glade. We saw some trampers coming back from the four day great walk, but mostly had the place to ourselves.
When we got back to the camp it was starting to get dark and we saw lightning - a thunderstorm was brewing over the Kepler! Mum made us some dinner and we took it outside to the picnic table, and sat under a blossom tree to watch the storm over the mountains. It was amazing. Thunder and lightning just where we had been, that's how changeable the weather is here.
As we tumbled in to bed, We all agreed that This is way better than tv.
