Woke up this morning with the waves crashing just metres away from our Jucy campervan (who has been affectionately renamed Shrek due to its big green persona!) with a mild Gisbourne Scrumpy hangover after having a lil cider induced dance as the sunset last night.
Camping is really fun and I would definately recommend a campervan to anyone wanting a more independent way of travelling around New Zealand. Waking up time whenever the light shines through the curtains and cooking breakfast on the back of a tiny stove is quite an accomplishment for this self confessed Princess!
After a quick freshen up at the nearby Neptunes backpacker hostel, we hit the road to our next destination, Hokitika. A small, but character filled town about 40kms south of Greymouth. I quite liked it here, again with a fantastic beach and some epic waves near the river mouth. I tried the local delicacy of whitebait patties...i think the giant seagulls may have appreciated these more than I did, but still worth a try. Right by the river mouth there is even a grounded boat you can enjoy your picnic in.
130kms later and I arrived in Franz Josef. Jen from Franz Josef Glacier Guides and Glacier Hot Pools has hooked me up with a Heli hike I am doing tomorrow, but first I was treated to a private hot pool...what an experience! I have never tried anything like this and throughly enjoyed it. The public pools had several different pools with different temperatures and the private pool was great. Our own lil private pool for 45 minutes of much deserved pampering after a few days in a campervan!
I am SOOOOOO excited about the heli-hike tomorrow! I've sent heaps of customers on these trips and have wanted to do them myself for so long...
