OMG! The heli-hike was everything and more that I hoped it would be…
The helicopter ride itself was a fantastic experience. Soaring up over the clouds and just below the snow capped mountains, the Gslaciers came into view. From a far they looked like a pure white waterfall, but as we got closer, the shapes and formations became apparent. We were dropped at the landing pad with our guide George ready to take us on a hike across the Glacier towards a waterfall glacier we could see in the distance. What became apparent immediately was the vast space the Glacier covered.
George took us to a formation that he said only a few hours earlier was safe to walk through, but had changed to such a degree that he didn't want to take us through it. The ever changing nature of the Glacier was also apparent at the end of our hike when some of the steps George had carved out for us at the beginning on the hike, only 1.5hours prior, now needed to be re-carved.
Along the hike we were given facts about the glacier and what I found most interesting is that the West Coast is due for an earth quake (apparently anytime soon!) and they entire area of Franz Josef and the Glacier will no longer exist!
The glaciers were a must do for me on this trip and proved to be just as awesome an experience as I thought they would be. The return helicopter flight took us soaring back over the glacier for one last view of this natural phenomenon as the town of Franz Josef came into view.
