Louise and Julia's Travels
Hi everyone,
Sorry its been a while- again!
Well seems to be going back ages. Visited the Ballestos Islands- famous for harvesting its bird poo- smelt lovely. Saw loads of sea lions, penguins, dolphins and birds. Spent a night in Puerta Inca camping on the beach, where we had a sangria night and a bbq over a fire. Then headed off to Arequipa, the capital of the south of Peru. Pretty town, lots of white buildings, overlooked by a snow capped volcano. Did a bit of shopping, visited a convent and tried guinea pig and alpaca- interesting.
Set off ridiculously early the next day top visit the Colca Canyon- the 2nd largest in the world. Saw a couple of condors. Then to recover from the cold spent a few hours in the hot springs in Chivay whilst enjoying a few cocktails- nice! Then set off at 5am for a 12 hr journey to Cusco- a real party town full of tourists- managed to discover the local bars and clubs- and free drinks, and made it out for 24 hrs. The food here is the best so far- cultivating our beer bellies well!!
Spent 4 days on the Inca trail. Was amazing- about 45km in total, most of it steep up hill. The 2nd day is known as the hardest, on the dead womans pass, where you trek 6km up hill to an altitude of 4200m, before descending 4km- off course with our athletic ability we had no problems!! The porters are amazing, running past carrying tents, bags, tables etc etc, and even waking you up with a cup of tea. The second night was the coldest, where we had snow and had to eat our tea with one hand, whilst holding up the tent with the other and a river of ice running under our feet!! We arrived at Macchu Picchu on the 4th day after a 4.30 start, a bit cloudy but still amazing. Had a beer top celebrate, then explored before cracking open the champagne to celebrate B and Andy's engagement (he proposed at the top of Wanupicchu mountain- how romantic!). Got the train back to Ollantayambo, before getting on a bus for a supposedly 1.5 hr journey. However this is if you have headlights especially over the mountainous terrain in the pitch black. Therefore the versatility of head torches came into their own, and so with a few attached to the windscreen wipers we crawled home- a few near misses but thankfully we survived and got the adrenaline going for a good night out. Survived the 24hr challenge- actually making it to 26 by staying out clubbing til 5.30am! Hard job but we rose to the challenge.
Now spent a few days chilling in Cusco, watching football, shopping and eating nice food.
Off to Puno tomorrow and lake titicaca, before heading into Bolivia.
Hope you are all well!!
Ciao for now xxxxx
