After a broken night, we awoke to a beautiful sunny (but cold) day. We decided to do some sight-seeing, and after a couple of wrong turns found Dealey Plaza, the site of JFK's assassination. The famous Book Depository is now a museum called The Sixth Floor Museum.
This museum is very good - if we didn't have a cranky and bored four year with us, we most likely would have lingered longer at this slightly macabre but fascinating museum.
Two of the kids were free admission and everyone got a headset and audio tour (not that Joe was interested). I was amused to hear the delightful ticket attendant call Paul "Sugar" about five times. You can't take photos inside the Museum, though there are plenty of photo opportunities outside, including two sad "x's" marked on the street to mark where President Kennedy was shot, and the anti-climax of a grassy knoll.
Afterwards we decided to check out the American Girl store at the Galleria. Little girls can purchase (for US $100!) a doll that resembles them with similar skin tone, eye colour and hair style, and they can purchase an outfit to match their doll. Simultaneously cute and creepy in a Stepford Wife sort of way. There are also books, inspiring historical heroines and some "girl power" messages too. Sadly for Imogen we didn't get one for her, but we saw plenty of other little girls with their Mini-Me.
Following that, the two younger kids went back to the hotel for some down time with Paul while the big kids and I went shopping. We were determined to get the Macy's Visitor Discount Card (10%) but it took us a while before we found a service counter with a staff member available to help. Siobhan purchased the much-coveted BabyG watch that is apparently all the rage with pre teens. Poor Matt wanted only to check out the US equivalent of EB Games, but there was no such store at the Galleria, so he was dragged (sullenly at the end) to J. Crew and Sephora while I discovered what size I am in US clothing and bought some makeup (WHY do we pay so much for the same thing in Aus?).
By the time we got home to the hotel Joe and Imogen were both asleep. The KFC next door was therefore the logical choice for a takeaway dinner. Did you know that they don't sell chicken nuggets or chips here? Instead they have biscuits (a savory scone type of thing) and sides like Mac n cheese (an alarming shade of orange) and green beans.
Tomorrow we are thinking the Zoo or Fort Worth Stockyards might be the go.
