We got into Dallas Fort Worth Airport, caught the shuttle to the car rental place and collected our rental Dodge Denaro(?) which is kind of like the spoof Canyonaro from The Simpsons. Huge.
Paul had downloaded the Tom Tom GPS map of the USA on his iPhone before we left - it was fantastic at guiding us from the airport to our hotel in Dallas. There was little traffic, which was good, as Paul was trying to drive on the wrong side of the road and get used to a strange car - the highway is a little scary here, not unlike a tangle of concrete spaghetti. As we drove through the George W Bush Turnpike we were reminded that yes, we were in Texas!
Very flat landscape, cold and overcast, around 3 degrees Celsius. Glad we packed a warm jacket in the cabin luggage.
Our hotel, the Hilton Embassy Suites, is lovely with a large atrium lobby complete with two resident white swans named Queen and Barron! The other cool thing is that the hotel is about half a mile from a huge shopping mall called the Galleria - it even has an ice skating rink inside! We decided to visit there to try to acclimatize to this time zone and discovered there are HUGE post Christmas sales on - hooray! We had dinner at Taco Bell and a quick look around. Must go back to do some serious shopping before the sales (up to 75%) end.
We had no trouble falling asleep, but the kids were all awake at 2:00am. Sigh.
