well here i finally am, in Rio de Janeiro. Even yesterday, saying goodye to Mum and sitting on the 12 hours flight (with an extra hour and a half sitting on the tarmac at heathrow due to technical problms with the plane), it all seemed rather surreal and distant. even though i had no real concept of wht it would be like apart from hot (the bbc had informed me it would be 37C), actually being here has somehow exceeded expectations.
I arrived late at Ognen's flat last night after an uneventful flight. the highlight wasprobably seeing cheryl cole at the airport going throught he scurity machine next to mine. she is just as pretty in real life! ognen is my art teacher's son and he has kindly let me and emma stay at his flat during carnival, despite the fact his girlfriend cris is due to have their first baby in less than a week! so exciting! she is going to be a girl and called Lara.
the flat is spacious with stunning views overlooking copacabana beach where i spent most of my first day with lena, cris' sister. she is so nice and we had a great day despite the fact that i speak no portuguese and she speks no english. we got by with the help of my spanish and a portuguese-engish dictionary!she told me that she cant swim which i find incredible given how close she lives to the beach. it seems such a waste of the beautiful water which is bright blue and crystal clear. we drank coconut milk and generally had such a relaxing day though ive managed to burn already which ruins any chance of blending in with the locals!
not sure what we are up to this evening though lena keeps talking about "baila" which if its the same as spanish means dancing so maybe we will do that tonight otherwise im happy having an early night as im quite tired still after yesterday.
all my love to you all and ill try load up some photos though the computer is really tempramental xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Mum How lovely - warm and relaxing. It's snowing again in Fulham and the pace of life is still manic except when you are in a traffic jam, which is too often. xx
