Our last day in Naples was a busy one, taking on the same hectic pace as the city around us. It is sort of an endearing madness in Naples though, like the entire city has some extra bounce in its step.
The highlight of today was the Naples underground tour that took us into the ancient Greek/Roman aqueduct system. The neatest thing that I Iearned was that during WWII, the underground system was used as a refuge from the bombings for thousands of Naples' elderly and young. Actually, the steps that we used to access the site were put in for that exact purpose.
Our walking tour of Naples was great for many reasons, but a large one was the food! We were treated to pizza at the famous Pizzeria del Presidente, named after Bill Clinton dropped by in 1994. It was sublime.
While we sought out that gem, another we just happened to stumble upon. Apparently Sal de Riso is considered the premier pastry chef in Italy (working out of the Amalfi coast) and we were lucky enough to sample his famous ricotta and pear torte. Enough said.
Honestly though, Naples has an amazing food culture where everything is fresh, good quality, and even the dingiest stores have good looking wares.
We finished our busy day by catching a train to Rome, which we happily found riot-free.
