Today's adventure took us just a few train stops away to the ruins of Pompeii. Not since my last trip to the Ohio have I seen a place in such disrepair. Jokes aside, the ruins were interesting for a number of reasons. First, the scale of the site is unbelievable. You cannot possibly see Pompeii in a couple of hours. We were there for 5 and managed to see about 3/4's of it. Second, which I guess is more obvious, is how incredible it is that a city of that size was excavated in an archaeological dig, especially in the tremendous shape that it is in. And lastly, it was quite surprising just how centrally located the ruins are. Thinking of a site like Pompeii gives an impression of isolation, yet the ruins are as much a part of the surrounding city as anything else.
In the photo, that is ominous Vesuvius brooding in the background.
