This morning was another early start ready for our 7.45am pick-up. After a few more pick-ups we were finally on our way, around 8.30am, first stop was Mount Eden, an extinct volcano on the outskirts of Auckland. Luckily the bus (well our driver, Dodgy - aka Dave) drove us up to the top to enjoy some lovely coast to coast city and harbour views. We then hit the motorway for an hour and a half, taking the chance for a kip, before stopping in the town of Thames for an essentials (toilet, ATM, supermarket) stop and we stocked up on Banoffi Pie chocolate! Around mid-day we set off for the final leg of the day's journey to Hahei, taking just over an hour through the Coromandel Pennisular. The scenery was spectacular, forests and hills and our first sight of good ol' New Zealand sheep!
Once we could see the sea we stopped for a photo opp before cruising into Hahei. One this final stretch Sarah offered to collect accommodation and BBQ money (owt for a free beer!), but once she returned the dosh to Dodgy, she got a very nasty surprise from a wasp, which embedded itself in the crease of her big toe! - Ouch!
Once in the small town we checked into our dorm, at Cathedral Cove Backpackers (like a traditional camp sight), and enjoyed soup for lunch before heading to the beach to start the walk along the coast to Cathedral Cove. We enjoyed the walk (slightly more hilly than we hoped), took in the spectacular scenery and wandered along the coves (Gemstone Bay, Cathedral Cove, Stingray Bay (on way back)) before settling on a rock to rest and take in the scenery before the trek back. Back at the dorm we freshened up before helping to make salad to accompany our BBQ tea of steak and sausages!
