Yesterday morning we were up early and our bus (with new driver Kathie) departed around 8.00am. It was a long drive straight across country to Christchurch, to break the journey we had a break in a small town in the morning, where, obviously, we had to purchase a New Zealand delicacy - Hokey Pokey biscuits! Following this break we had a couple of stops along some glacial lakes which were overlooked by the stunning Southern Alps and New Zealand highest mountains - Mount Cook. We got some great pictures, including views from a tiny church on the shores of Lake Tekapo. The scenery out of the alter window was out of the world, an amazing place for a wedding. Our afternoon lunch break was taken in a small town called Geraldine. We confirmed our ferry ticket back to the North Island, then hit the local deli to try some cheese, olives and fudge before stumbling across another little shop where we consumed a lot of jams and sauces - no need for lunch! After this stop we headed straight into Christchurch, falling asleep to the film Elizabeth on the way! We arrived in the city and checked into Base at around 5.00pm. We headed straight to the supermarket and then spent the evening with a veg stir fry (Laura) and Pasta with Camembert (Sarah) before eating some more biscuits in front of the fabulous film 'Cinderella Man.'
This morning we were up around 8.30am and spent a lazy morning getting ready and eating coffee and toast. We headed into Cathedral Square around 11.00am and spent a couple of hours browsing the souvenir shops and taking piccies of the city before heading over to the Arts Centre. Here was the best part of the day - the Fudge Cottage! We had a couple of tasters then embarked on the kitchen tour. On the hour long tour we learnt the art of making fudge and the history of the little shop, but the best part was getting to try the different flavours! We overdosed slightly on our favourites - Apricot Liquer, Hokey Pokey, Dairy Cream and Baileys! We even had to save our free gift for later in the evening we felt that sick!
Following our mammoth fudge session, we wandered through the little craft shops in the Art Centre then headed to the Botanical Gardens for a wander, laughing at some head banging ducks on the river. We headed back towards Cathedral Square just after 4.00pm and looked in more shops before heading back to the hostel for a chilled evening and a veg korma - yum!
