So we survived the bus journey and have had the most gorgeous couple of days here in Itacare - it´s a small fishing town that was turned into a tourist destination about ten years ago, but it still feels very ´undiscovered´. We´re pretty much the only English speaking gringos here! Our bus was meant to leave Rio at 10pm on Thursday night, but it didn´t rock up until after midnight - people kept chatting away to us in Portuguese, so we didn´t know if the bus just wasn´t coming, or was delayed, or what!
We finally set off at 12,30pm and passed out pretty quickly. We stopped during the night at a service station for a loo/food break, but we stayed onboard. We were the only non-Brazilians there, except for three Norwegian guys, who we ran into on the beach today. It was just incredible waking up at 6am and seeing the amazing scenery going past - we were way up in the mountains, acres of beautiful rainforest as far as you could see, valleys with the stillest lakes at the bottom - wow!!
The day flew by, with the scenery, and our books. Jay diligently studied his Portuguese, so we´ve had a few more words to get by over the last few days. We got into Ilheus at 11pm, then we got a taxi as far as Itacare. Our accommodation is just gorgeous, a little thatched bungalow in the middle of the grounds, and our own bathroom - just bliss after the dorms of Rio!!
We hit the beach yesterday, we got a little canoe out there and spent a couple of hours sunbathing, then had fried fish and salad for lunch, before we got the boat back - we are so lucky! We grabbed dinner in a kilo restaurant, where you load up your plate and pay by the 100g, om!
We had breakfast this morning at the hotel - it seems to be included everywhere in Brazil - lovely tropical fruits, cake and eggs. Found a great beach later on, the sea was actually bath-warm! I had coconut water (they drill a hole in a coconut and stick a straw in it) and Jay had Skol, the local beer. Tonight, we watched the sunset on the beach with a couple of cans (oh the class, ha ha!!) and had a bite to eat (yet again).
We´re off to Salvador tomorrow, so we´ll be in touch from there.
Hope everyone from home is really well - wish you were here to experience this with us, but our blog will have to do!
Lots of love,
Jay and Lorraine
PS: Will try not to say ´we´so much from now on!!!!
