Lorraine and Jay on The Big Trip
Hi all,
We´re in Foz do Iguazu at the moment, to see the famous falls.... We flew from Salvador yesterday morning, one three hour flight to Curitiba, then another hour on to Foz. Felt SO posh getting a flight after all the bus travel!! We arrived at our hostel at around 3pm, it`s a campsite with dorms, place is fantastic. Pool, free internet (by the pool!), cheap bar and a nice (English-speaking - hallelujah!)crowd. There´s actually a girl from Naas here, the first Irish person we`ve met, so nice to speak as quickly as I want! We chilled by the pool for the afternoon, then had a lot of caiprinhas with a tour group we`ve met. They offered us a lift on their bus to the falls today, so we were up bright and early to meet them. Both wrecked...
You can see the falls from either the Argentinian or Brazilian side, as they`re right on the border between the two countries. We went to the Brazilian side today, set in a national park. We could hear them as soon as we got into the park, and when we saw them.. .wow!!! Impossible to desribe the force of the water -. there´s 270 separate waterfalls. You walk out on a platform to view them and the negative ions in the water are meant to have mood-lifting qualities. We were pretty cynical, but as soon as we got out near them, our hangovers lifted, magic! There`s little rainbows at the top of the bigger falls, beautiful. Jay took some fab pics, so we`ll whack them up to give you an idea of it. The Argentinian side is meant to be even better, so we`re going there tomorrow, and doing some kind of tour package, so maybe rafting or else getting a boat in under the falls... can´t wait!
We went to a bird park afterwards, we weren`t expecting anything amazing, but we spent about three hours wandering around. You walk through huge aviaries, one like the African Savannah, one like the Brazilian wetlands, and all the birds you`d expect from that area. The last one we walked through was a humming bird/butterfly one - like a little paradise. A butterfly landed on Jay and wouldn´t move, so we were hoping we´d get to keep it! Last stop was to do tourist pics of posing with a parrakeet and a snake, which got v tight around Jay`s neck...
We picked up some food in the town on the way home and hit the pool for a while. It gets dark so late here, not until around 9pm, and sunshine right up until then - we`re used to it getting dark at 6 up north, so nights feel really long, it`s great. First home cooked dinner since we got here, loved it! V v basic chicken/baked potato/salad, but was like manna from heaven to have something really simple. Love the food here and it´s v cheap, but it doesn´t feel like a treat to eat out anymore.
We´re moving across to Argentina in the morning, only ten mins down the road to a town called Puerto Iguazu, so it`ll be bye bye Brazil, ah! Second leg of the trip is looking very different, we have a loose idea of where we want to go, but we`re not going to be as organised as we were in Brazil, so if we like somewhere, we can stay on longer etc.
Conor, happy bday!
Lisa, congrats on the house!!
Dor, get well soon please!!!
