We regretfully depart Mainz and head to Mainz Hbf (main railway) and validate our Eurail pass, which will be our means of transportation around Europe until 10 Jan 2013. Our first usage is the 1013am train to Worms (pronounced V-or-ms) and travel in style in 1st class. Takes only 26 mins as no stoppages and train is powering alone at approx 160k/m. After only slight confusion, locate Hôtel Boos. Very quaint and main foyer looks like an entrance to a castle. Room once again is lovely and for first time, free Wi-fi.
We set off into town with our town walk map in hand. We follow the suggested path to discover 2000 years of history in Worms. We visit locations such as the Roman town wall built around 900A.D, the Collegiate Church of St Paul erected in 1016, the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, the Dom of St Peter (spectacular), the Lutheran Monument, and take the Rhine promenade to access the Bridge Tower which is also spectacular and well worth the walk. We stumble across the Magnus Church, the oldest Church in Worms 8A.D. We are greeted by the Pastor who provides us with a private tour of the church and explains that it was bombed & destroyed in the Second World War with the exception of the baptismal font & the tower bell which landed intact right next to the font. She is lovely and we are invited for coffee and German cake which is served by other parish helpers- what a special treat!!!
On returning to our motel, we are greeted by Peter, the owner of the motel, who takes us on a magical tour of a fantasy world he has constructed within the hotel-Wow! Peter and his son have created a thematic, animated representation of a German folk tale in a way that cannot be described with few words. You will have to ask us about this special experience.
Worms- wow, love it! So happy that we factored this stop into the holiday schedule.
