5/10/12 arrive Frankfurt Airport 610 pm German time. Reasonably easy exit through immigration. Use my Italian passport for the first time. Wow, straight through the EU immigration counter whilst the rest have to do the push and shove with a few hundred Koreans. Jesse has caught the train from Mainz to meet us at the Airport. AWESOME!!!!!He then guides us from Airport by bus and train to Frankfurt am Main, the city train station. With the aid of smart phone Google map, we find our Hotel, Holiday Inn express and check in . Nice hotel and the sizeable and 'in your face' red light district is just up the road.......ha ha!
Jesse then provides us with the compulsory anti-jet lag walking tour of the city, an imperative learned from Beth Grace, Trinity Italia 2005. Included in tour is a walk past the ever increasingly more infamous Euro Building, a Starbucks Hot Chocolate, and a visit to Frankfurt's reknown Ostzeile on the Romerberg in the Altstadt (historical area). Loretta and I thinks that it is all pretty surreal and amazing at night (yes, we are tripping out because it is 3am Australia time)-staggering traditional German buildings with Frankfurts ancient cathedral ominously looming in the darkness, sidewalk cafes and gorgeous lighting. Jesse points out that the rebuilding of the area following 95% destruction by the allied forces at the tail of the 2nd world war has led to a glossy reconstruction that gives the area a non-authentic appearance. I guess we will have a better sense of that perspective when we return tomorrow in the daylight. We return to hotel to seek out some sleep as Jesse leaves us to return to Mainz for another night and morning of 'young persons revelry' Buona Notte, no I should be saying: gutten nacht
