After a disturbed sleep caused by a constant stream of street noise, we leave Frankfurt and catch the train to Mainz:
ICE Inter city express, 10 Euro each, expensive, considering Mainz is only 40 minutes from Frankfurt.
Jesse meets us at the station and helps us locate our motel, the Mainzer Hof, which is situated directly opposite the Rhine River. Having had Jesse to meet us in both Frankfurt and Mainz has been a Godsend, really helping us with orientation, transition and grounding. As check in is still 3 hours away, we leave our bags at reception and head off to explore the city.
We are surprised by the beauty of Mainz, in particular, the extensive Altstatt (historical area). 85% of Mainz was destroyed during the Second World War including many of it's beautiful old buildings. Fortunately the historical centre had been rebuilt, most tastefully and true to the pre-war specifications. Others have been restored poorly. Nevertheless, we spend many hours wandering through beautiful laneways and plazas of this lovely town, which rival any of Italy's best.
We eventually check into the accommodation. The room is very spacious and on the fourth floor. The very large windows provide a spectacular view of the Rhine.
We subsequently walk to where Jesse is now living and enjoy a much deserved rest and a coffee. He is well set up thanks to the efforts of his house-mates. Time for dinner, so we set off once again : we have walked 10-15 klms today and all this walking has made us hungry! We enjoy a pizza at a lovely italian restaurant directly opposite both the Rhine & our accommodation. Feeling weary, we say goodnight to Jesse, who sets off to visit one of his friends. We return to our room to settle for the evening.
