Day 38 - 17th August Patagonia to Hermosello Mex
Finally made the leap into Mexico, I think the longer I was hanging around in Arizona the more nervous I was getting. Started out early from Patagonia to Nogales so I could get to the post office and mail some knives I had bought at Tombstone back to OZ. From what I have heard it's not a good idea to carry knives across the border. After that I headed to the border crossing and waited in line at a permit section of customs to find out how I could get the Carnet completed before I leave the US. Lucky I did as I had to go to another Border crossing just outside of town to get processed, this turned out to be a good option as when I entered Mexico the highway by passed Mexico Nogales and headed straight for the auto pista.
Km 12 into Mexico was Aduana (customs) and after checking my bags I was on the way to Km 23 which is Aduana (bike permit) and immigration. It had taken about an hour to get the paperwork completed and I was off south towards Hermosillo about 300km away. I spent $1300 on that Carnet and all it has done so far is confuse border officials, can only blame myself for that one. The bike was entered through a bike permit and not the Carnet
The highways are toll roads and aprox every 100km there is a booth to hand over the money. Other from that the highways are in great shape except for the topes in every small town I went through. Topes are large speed bumps to slow traffic down in towns, will have to get used to them.
Picked one of the first Hotels at a cost of $500 pesos, sounds like a rip-off but it equates to $49.00 AUS. The temp in town reached 45 degrees and although it seemed hot I have been coping well, keeping well hydrated. Any way back up to the air conditioned room as I had to go to the lobby to get Wi-Fi reception, and have a couple of cerversas.
I was going to take some photos along the way but with all the fast moving traffic and Federals around I decided to keep moving.
Cheers
Greg
