Day 37 - 19th August Hermosillo to Culiacan Mex
Late night and strange accommodation
Started out early again to avoid the traffic but to no avail as it was already jammed with traffic. The GPS map card for Mexico has helped but a paper map is still needed. Hit the Auto Pista soon afterwards and headed towards Culiacan. The Auto Pistas are great, there is little traffic and the roads are in great shape. Roughly every 80km there is a toll booth and the price ranges from $28 to $176 Pesos, conversion to Aus is about 10 - 1, paying $17 is very pricey but it is a better alternative to the free roads that head through every small town .
My destination for the day was actually Los Mochas about 200km short of Culiacan, but after driving through the very busy town and finding no accommodation I decided to push on to Culiacan. Little did I know but Culiacan is the capital of Senolia state and once I headed into town it was a never ending loop of one way streets. My GPS kept telling me to turn left into head—on traffic in a one way street. A general rule for all motorcycling journeys is not to ride at night, well is was 7.30 and getting dark quickly and there were no hotels in site. After about one hour of riding through mad peak hour traffic I finally noticed a hotel to the right and rode straight in. After some very bad Spanish dialog from me I found myself in a very secluded love motel for $260 pesos. It was essentially a garage for your car or motorbike with a door straight into a motel room. I will not go into detail on what was on all the TV channels, but you get the general idea. After all the negativity about Mexico I was still apprehensive about my surroundings so this did not help. Actually so far I have found Mexico ok and I finally get to use some very bad Spanish.
Next Destination is Puerto Vallarta, so another long day in the saddle to finally reach some Pacific Coast beaches.
Cheers
Greg
