Day 38 & 39 - 20th & 21st August Culiacan to Puerto Vallarta Mex
Pacific Dreams
These early starts are getting tiresome, I didn't thing motorcycling would be this hard but I keep thinking I'm running behind time. I can see some more rest days coming up soon.
Again I wanted to get out of this city before the traffic built up but I kind of like the urban mayhem. Eventually found the Auto Pista and started heading south again. I have been a little slack with photos so I will have to make an effort to take some more.
The speed bumps (topes) are a pain but I guess it give locals a chance to sell items to the slowing traffic. I also hit an extremely violent storm, lucky I could see it coming and I put the wet weather gear on. I could only see 20 meters in front me five minutes later and it was difficult to pull over. By the time I reached another toll station I stopped at the Pemex gas station to remove wet weather gear as it was still hot. It wasn't long before my bike was being cleaned by a local so 10 pesos and a can of coke was in order for the duties.
Turned off the highway and hit some rural roads heeding for Puerto Vallarta. It was single lane roads all the way and besides meeting very slow and extremely fast traffic the twisting roads were great compared to the straights.
Puerto Vallarta is a big tourist destination and was extremely busy. Tried to find a hotel form the Lonely Planet book but turned out to be useless as it took me into the slums. Had to use all my skills to motor out of the ghettos and try and find some accommodation. I will have to get a better way of finding a hotel, I think using the GPS in North America has spoilt me.
Finally found hotel Los Pericos just outside of town and it turned out to be nice and relaxing. Little did I know that my face was black with exhaust fumes as I rode through town, must have looked rough to the receptionist, I didn't know until I looked in the bathroom mirror. Situated next to the beach I must have had half a dozen swims in the oceans warm water. It's starting to get very tropical now and each evening brings storm.
Cheers
Greg
