We have arrived in Kanchanaburi, home of the bridge over the river Kwai and it is cool. Really laid back and quiet compared to Bangkok which to be honest is a relief. Rach and I think that we spent a day too long there and should have travelled here yesterday but then we did have a good day yesterday there so It worked out ok.
Yesterday we visited Wat Pho which is home to a massive golden reclining Buddha. The temple is extremely important to Thais and packed with things to see so we decided to hire a guide so we could learn more and it was definately worth it. Chatri, our guide brought the place to life and was thoroughly entertaining. He even read Rachel's palm and that was really funny!
We also had an enlightening day as we worked out that we had been victims of a scam, not once but every single day! We thought it was odd that every day we met somebody (a Thai) who was holidaying/visiting Bangkok outside a tourist attraction who would chat to us about what we were doing and where we were going and would tell us that we should visit a Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) office. they would then conveniently hail a tuk tuk that was right there and off we would go to this office.
Well yesterday we caught one of these friendly chap hagning about where we'd met hima day previously, this time not dressed smartly like a tourist and laughing and joking witha bunch of tuk tuk drivers and then it made thrilling sense. It was a scam to get us to buy expensive tours and hotels but luckily I am way to tight to pay the prices they were asking and as such we didn't really lose any money. We are certainly wiser for the experience.
So today we caught the train from Thonburi station in Bankok to Kanchanaburi and this was the highlight of the trip for me so far. (1) Because we proved the lying scammers wrong that the train wouldn't be booked up and did only cot 100baht each and (2) The journey was really scenic, passing through rice paddies and banana plantations, swamplands with miles of water lilies and the hustle and bustle of life in small rural Thai villages. We also got chatting to a French man who gave us good ideas about an island to visit and was really nice!
Our room in Kanchanaburi was a s***hole, realy grim and poky so leaving our bags there we went ff and quickly found a much nicer room that was cheaper also. So all in all everything is coming together and we are a lot more confident about things and are getting the hang of this travelling lark!
