We arrived into Cusco at midnight on Friday 4th September after a 12 hour bus journey from Copacobana, which was probably the worst journey we have had so far in South America. The driver drove so fast and with no regard for oncoming cars or the fact that we were passing overturned oil tankers and buses along the way. But we made it and decided the next day would be a good day to have a few drinks and relax. Also Bob and Vivienne were arriving into Cusco to join up with us for their 3 week holiday...so loads of good times ahead!
We pretty much relaxed when Bob and Vivienne arrived and thank goodness they didnt really suffer from the altitude that much so we were still able to walk around and see the sights. There was some sort of parade on that Saturday in Cusco so we got to see all the traditional dress of the women and the soldiers parading around in their uniforms and all their guns. Cusco itself is a lovely city with lots of gorgeous buildings and churches, and of course the token Irish pub just off the square...gotta love Paddy Flahertys! It has lovely cobbled streets and a big plaza in the centre where everything seems to happen during the day. The 4 of us decided to book a white water rafting trip for the Monday so as not to be too lazy before the Inca Trail starting on the Wednesday morning.
We arrived at the rafting office for 9 on the Monday morning where we met our guide and our bus and we started the 1 hour journey to the river. We got to the cabin and got kitted out in our wetsuits, lifejackets and helmets and we got on our way. It was a Class 3 & 4 river which meant there was quite a bit of work involved so as soon as we got our instructions we were on our way. It was really exciting and quite daunting in some spots when it seemed like a million rapids were coming together to form this huge white hole of water that we somehow had to paddle our way through. There was a few times I thought I was a goner from the boat but John caught me everytime I bounced a little too high off the edge!! It was a brilliant day though and we all really enjoyed it,ended the day with slightly sore arms and ice blocks for feet but definitely worth every Peruvian Sole!
On Tuesday night we checked into the Prisma Hotel where we met our group and guide for the Inca Trail and got our introduction as to what exactly we would be doing over the 7 day tour. We were all really excited that night and couldnt wait to get started on the trip but kinda sad to be leaving Cusco too. Better places were still to come though!
Cusco Done!
