As usual we were up at 5.30 for the morning drive.....and 2 & half hours later we were still playing uno out on the deck as Zoe & Ali were still out looking for rhinos! They returned around 8 and after an emotional goodbye to Zoe [who was off home today, our American friends left yesterday] we were finally on our way (and finally in sunshine!)
The drive started as it usually did with sightings of giraffe & a great picture of kudu & impala & warthogs all grazing together. However the pesky pussycats were hiding in he grasses & although we had a good signal we couldn't get a visual. So we decided to look for elephants instead - surely they can't hide?? However we couldn't get a strong signal for them either so I'm yet to see one on the reserve. I did see my first zebra in selati though - that was prob the highlight of the morning drive
Back at base and an hours debate on how to make a cheese toastie ensued while I attempted to create an anti mosquito tent over my bunkbed - it was a mission but I managed it so I shudnt get munched on during the night now it's warmer
We were then off on afternoon drive. Selati & Mica (grandma & great aunt lion) continued to give us the run around so we decided to move to a clearing for phuza (tea & coffee). We've been to this clearing a few times & is often baboons in the trees & they generally ignore us, tonight was no different but no sooner had we poured the coffees did they start making warning sounds - a quick check of the telemetry & it turns out our kitties were v close so it was back on the truck and within less than a minute there was selati & mica strolling across the clearing! They sat for a bit before having a drink at the waterhole - as they walked it was obvious their bellies were full - they'd recently had dinner so we were safe - which was lucky as this time it was the telemetry equipment which fell out of the truck!! Luckily we managed to retrieve it without being eaten and got to watch selati rubbing her scent onto the trees before heading off into the night
We arrived back at base to take out pizza and the next round of new arrivals, can't believe I've been here a wk & am now telling them how it all works!!
