My final adventure is 24 hours in Dubai. After managing to find the metro I was on my way to the hotel.
Walking out of the air conditioned station the heat hit instantly - as did the humidity! Was nothing for it, would have to spend the next 4 hours by (and in) the pool!!
At 3 I left the hotel & travelled to the Dubai mall to pick up my ticket for the burj khalifa - the tallest building, free standing structure & man made structure!
It took 6 years to build - which is almost as long as the queue for the lifts to the top! I hadn't planned seeing sunset up there but looks like I might have timed it perfectly!
Some more facts about the burj khalifa:
828m tall
Visible 95km away
Longest elevator - 140 floors, & fastest elevator travelling 10m/s
Building with most number of storeys (over 200)
The Concrete Weighs the same as 100,000 elephants!
Rather disappointingly though the Observation deck is only on the 124 floor. Still that's 452 m up. Everything just looked miniature - in fact the view was pretty much the same as from the plane this morning!
It started getting busier as it approached sunset and I'd had enough of screaming kids & being barged by rude tourists & since there wasn't a bar up there I decided to go find one rather than wait the half hour or so til sunset.
Back on the ground and remembering I was in Dubai I realised I was unlikely to find a mojito so opted for a mint & lime fizz instead. I'd picked a little sushi place overlooking the river & got to watch the sunset behind the burj khalifa - much better than being at the top of it!! And it wasn't long until the dancing fountain show started. This is similar to the dancing fountains outside the bellagio in Vegas only bigger/longer/higher etc. different ones play for 5 mins every half hour so I got to see them as the sunset and again as it grew dark & this time could see that it lights up too. Turns out there are many different routines so I wasn't going to stop for them all! before heading back to the hotel I had a wander around a couple of the nearby souks but was mainly expensive jewellery or tacky souvenirs, I couldn't be bothered going elsewhere but given the lack of planning that I did I think I had quite a good day - and quite a good trip overall!
