After the disappointment last night we set off this morn hoping to see lions (& sunshine - is still 15-20oC & grey which makes driving round on the back of a truck for hours rather chilly)
We first searched for acacia (mummy lion) & the cubs but they were still hidden away on the coppie. We then went to look for mbhurri (daddy lion) & Matumi (Aunty lion). We finally tracked them down to some rocks on the river bank. At first we didn't have a great view but after they shared in some lion loving they were on the move walking past our truck & finally settling close to the road - however by this point the land owners had arrived so we move aside so they could enjoy the view
I also got my first sighting of some of the white rhino in selati this morn also......and lots of p**** cat prints - a civit & caracal & mbhurri! Plus we had a lesson on the differences between elephant & rhino poo!
So this afternoon the clouds had started to move aside & we set off wondering if it would be 3rd time lucky to see acacia & the cubs......they've been hidden up in the coppie for days so surely they're hungry???
As always we saw plenty of kudu & a couple of giraffe & a signal for acacia coming from the coppies.....enroute we also saw 12 vultures circling which made us think the lions might have killed something for dinner.....maybe tonight would be our night....
But it seemed not to be the case & after coffee we set off back to base. On the evening drive we use a spotlight to look for eyes in the dark and within minutes we caught some eyes....usually it's a hyena or bushbaby but tonight it was at last acacia, mfuti & a cub!!!!! They were walking down the road in front of us!!!!
Unfortunately it was almost impossible to get a decent picture of moving lions from a moving vehicle in the dark but was great to see them!! We followed them down to the river bed where they climbed the banking & into the night.......
