Yesterday was another glorious day of relaxation in Positano! :) I could really get used to this place…I began my day again with Christina's superb "Waka waka" breakfast - toasted muesli with fresh fruit & yogurt, made to order + blood orange juice & a cup of tea on the balcony. We spent the morning exploring the town's windy, narrow streets, looking in stores & picking up a few great bargains. I fell in love with an oil painting in an artist's store nearby the beach & spent some time chatting to him about his work & how long he'd been painting for. I decided to return later in the day to buy the piece, because I knew after 6 hours of contemplation that I did really love it & that it would forever remind me of one of my favourite places in Europe. Plus I am catching up with Dad on Saturday and he has VERY kindly agreed to take a few bits & pieces home to Perth for me, so it's really the best time to make that kind of purchase hehe (don't worry Dad, it's not too big!!). So that's the story of my very first purchase of a REAL piece of art (& the artist was even kind enough to write a message on the back of it for me).
I had another delicious calzone & gelato from the café I'd been to the day before, & it was just as good! Then we retired to the beach once again, having had such a glorious time there the day before. We hired our beach chairs, put up the umbrella, & I attempted to read for about 5 minutes before lapsing into a relaxation-induced coma! :D We lay there reading & relaxing for about 4 hours, with pina coladas in hand - yes, that's right, you can order pina coladas off the beach chair man & he will bring them down from the café to you! Magic! :D Seems they have a thing in Positano for making fairly potent cocktails, so we decided after one drink that we'd better head back towards the hostel before we became to wobbly to navigate the winding streets…having climbed literally about a 1000 stairs back up to the hostel the day before, we decided to catch the bus. Sure, we probably COULD have climbed them again…but we really didn't want to interrupt the whole relaxed mood of the evening :P
We went back to dinner at the place across the road, both wearing new summery floral dresses purchased that day! The owner was just as hospitable (he is a lovely, old Italian man) & chatted to us about time he'd spent living in Fremantle & coaching a rugby team at UWA - small world or what?? (He also speaks about 10 different languages & is exceptionally well traveled!) Actually, the other day at the bus stop in Sorrento, Esther met an older couple from Perth who we discovered knew her great aunt...not entirely sure how we managed to find that out, but yeah! Crazy! Anyway, dinner was wonderful again & I had the homemade seafood pasta on the owner's recommendation, which was delicious! He asked me what my travel plans were & told me I should come back to Positano in September & he would take me fishing for squid. I tried to explain the concept of a lack of money, but he seemed to think I could make a pretty decent living as a squid fisherman haha Hmm…we'll see! We said goodnight & he told us to come back in the morning for our final cappuccino in Positano because he has a book of the history of Positano that he would like to give us :) What lovely people there are in this town!
We chilled out back at the hostel, me munching on my tartufo - amazing Italian semifreddo icecreamy thing with one flavour inside another - & then feel deeply asleep again. I sleep soundly until 3:00AM when I woke up and got really excited about Nigel arriving on Sunday & then I couldn't sleep any more! I eventually gave up & got up around 6:30 to find that the weather has turned a little cold & drizzly for our departure…seems we got the finest 2 days in Positano that they've had in a long time! Lucky or what? :)
