Having made the decision to bus rather than ferry to Dubrovnik, we did NOT have to get up at 5:00AM on Tuesday morning! Yay! Instead Nigel got a blissful sleep in until I woke up about 6:30 :P Then after packing up & having one more cuppa at the lovely F-caffe we settled in for the 4.5 hour bus ride from Split to Dubrovnik. It's pretty spectacular scenery the whole way because you're traveling along the coastline, but it's also very windy & bumpy…and it was another one of those journeys a bit like Esther & experienced on the Amalfi coast where you stare out the window of the bus over the edge of a cliff in terror & hope to hell that the bus driver knows what he's doing!
When we got to Dubrovnik, we had to follow half a page worth of fine print instructions to wind our way through the old part of town (inside the old town walls) to our hostel, Fresh Sheets hostel. Fortunately we found it without any dramas (I put this down to my impeccable navigational skills…although they're not all that consistent so perhaps shear luck is more accurate…), but unfortunately there was a problem with the booking & we no longer technically had a room. Long story short: there had been a mix up (partly my fault, partly the owners) & we had arrived a day later than they were expecting us. Rather than email to say hey, what's the deal, are you guys showing up, they simply cancelled the entire booking & gave our room away to someone else…oh & emailed me afterwards, which I only received when I got to the hostel, to say so! Fortunately the girls at the front desk were fantastic, managed to switch a bunch of things around, & we were able to stay in the room we were originally booked into.
So they welcomed us to Dubrovnik with a shot of local liquor (something sweet & almondy), then we got settled in & went to explore the town. We found a great little secret swimming hole that you have to go through this kind of concealed hole in the wall to get to. It's got a little bar & a bunch of tables, chairs, & umbrellas set up all kind of into the cliff face, then you can climb down some stairs straight into the water. So we went for a quick dip, although we were definitely the only ones swimming because it was pretty chilly! Then we went further round the wall to another similar area, Buza café/bar for a drink later in the afternoon when the sun was getting lower & the light over the ocean is beautiful.
In the evening Nigel very kindly agreed to put his carnivorous tendencies on hold for an evening & go with me to a Vegetarian restaurant (Nishta) in town that the hostel had recommended. I was beside myself to discover they had a make-your-own salad bar!!! :D Seriously, it has been near impossible for me to get a good supply of salad or cooked veges ANYWHERE in the past 2 months, & as a crazy vege lover (I know, weird) I was really craving a big bowl of rabbit food hehe Fortunately they also had stuff to keep my man friend happy & we shared some vege spring rolls, pakora, & ratatouille bruschetta. I also had a glass of organic Croatian blueberry wine - oo! Terribly fancy darling :P The food was fantastic, while we went for a wander around the town to scope out our plans for tomorrow…
