On Wednesday morning we could see no sign of the hostel staff so we went to get a cuppa while waiting for our included breakfast to appear. We sat outside at one of the restaurants in the centre of town & were served by a lovely Croatian man who spoke very proudly about his Croatian history & friends he knew who had moved to Australia. He was a very strange mix of warm & hospitable, whilst also being scary in the kinda way that makes you not want to cross him! :P He invited us to come back for lunch saying he would give us 10% off (we nodded obediently & although Nigel insisted we didn't have to go back if we didn't want to I was kinda scared he might track us down if we didn't…).
After breakfast we went for a walk along the coastline outside of the old part of town to a quiet beach a couple of kilometers away. The sun rises here before 5:00AM & by 10:00AM it was already very hot & we were sweating as we walked along the roadside. Even though the maximum temperatures here only reach the mid-high 20s, for some reason it feels much warmer than it does back home…might be the humidity, or perhaps the lack of good air-conditioning anywhere, which means it's impossible to escape the heat. We followed a long set of stairs winding down the cliff face past an old bombed out hotel that had been left there after the destruction in the early 90s, where kids were hiding out making spooky ghost noises as we walked past. At the bottom of the cliff was a small stretch of beach where a handful of people were stretched out on deck chairs or lying on the pebbly ground. We went in for a quick swim to cool off then lay by the beach for a while. It's a little tricky to actually get from the deck chair to the water because the pebbles are really spiky underneath your feet & it's not particularly comfortable. We've actually seen a lot of kids swimming in crocs & I can kinda see why!
After enjoying the previous night's meal so much we returned to the vegetarian restaurant again (I believe it may even have been Nigel's suggestion!). We got another mixed salad & an "Indiastic" tasting plate with vegetable curry, vegetable pakora, yellow dahl, & rice. More om nom! It didn't disappoint. Afterwards we went to Sugar & Spice, a cute, tiny little bakery tucked away down an alleyway that was recommended at our hostel, for a delicious piece of chocolate slice.
In the afternoon we went back to the hostel for a while to try & escape the hottest part of the day & to nap. Unfortunately we only had one tiny window in our room, & we didn't get much breeze through there at all times of the day. But if we left our door open we managed to get a pretty good channel of air going through while we lay down! Then we headed out again to a beach much closer to the old town, which was much busier, but didn't involve a grueling walk to get there. More swimming & laying by the beach…watching kids play…lazing around…all that good stuff :)
We went back to Nishta AGAIN in the evening because there were still so many things on the menu we both wanted to try. Nigel had vegetarian burritos & I had baked sweet potato with lots of seasonal vegetables on top. We also paid another visit to Sugar & Spice, & took a piece of carrot cake with us back to the hostel to eat in bed because it was starting to rain. There was a spectacular thunderstorm that night & we just sat by the window watching the lightening over the ocean :)
