Had a wonderful weekend in Port McNeill with Miss Maggie :) Saturday morning we went to watch her brother, Tom, play baseball in the Orcafest tournament. And with Maggie's patient explanation I was actually able to understand what was going on! Then we went to Tom's girlfriend's place for some nibbles (including super scrumptious freshly baked cinnamon rolls! Om nom nom…) before watching the Orcafest parade. It went for all of about 10 or 15 minutes, & mostly involved pretty much every emergency vehicle in the town…apparently they were a little short on parade floats this year :P
Maggie had to work for a few hours at the pub in the afternoon so I went for a wander through down town Port McNeill, looking at all the stalls that were set up for Orcafest. I bought a hotdog from the hotdog stand & then bumped into Maggie's mum & dad, & they took me over to see the loggersports on the other side of town. Loggersports involves all kinds of lubber-jack-type activities like chopping or sawing or chainsawing through big chunks of wood. So a bunch of guys & gals basically race against each other to see who can do it the fastest. It felt VERY North American; it was a very cool thing to experience.
A little while later I walked back over to the centre of town, got myself a strawberry snow cone & then wandered along the waterfront for a while until Maggs had finished at work. We got to spend a couple hours hanging out together in the afternoon before she had to go back to work…the downside of it being the Orcafest is that it was the busiest weekend of the year at the pub, so Maggie had to work until 1:30AM! But we had a lovely Canadian brekky together the next morning - blueberry pancakes with bacon & maple syrup! Try it, it's amazing :D
