On Friday morning Maggie had to teach swimming lessons at the pool for a few hours so I hung out at home with Maggie's cat Nala. I was reading my Vancouver travel guide on the couch with her curled up on my chest. It was another beautiful, sunny day in Port McNeill, so when Maggs got back from the pool we headed off to Telegraph Cove for lunch. It's a beautiful little coves with lots of few old houses & dozens of brightly colour fishing boats moored in the bay. We sat out on the deck of a restaurant & had lunch in the sunshine.
After lunch we dropped by the whale museum; this part of Vancouver Island is very big on whales because there are frequent sightings off the coast & it's a big source of tourism. In fact, tomorrow would be the annual Orcafest in Port McNeill, to celebrate the migration of the orcas (killer whales) along the coast at this time of year. It's apparently one of the biggest events of the year for this small town, so I guess I picked a good weekend to be here.
In the afternoon Maggie took me for a wander around Port McNeill; this could probably have been completed in about 10 minutes, given how tiny the town is, but every 2 minutes somebody would call out to her & we'd stop to have a chat to one of the locals. Maggie's lived here her whole life so she knows the majority of the people in the town & I was quite the spectacle, having come all the way from Australia. Considering it takes about 12 hours to get from Vancouver to Port McNeill you can imagine it's not often they have international visitors.
In the early evening we met Maggie's mum & a friend of theirs for dinner at a local restaurant where I sushi chef from out of town has recently started working. This is a big deal for the people of Port McNeill, because before now you had to go to Port Hardy (the nearest town, about 30 minutes away) if you wanted to have sushi. The sushi chef is Korean & speaks hardly a word of English…he is rather unfortunately named Bang-Ho. We all had a bit of a giggle at that one, but I think the double entendre is lost on him…he makes great sushi though!
In the evening Maggie & I watched Despicable Me, an animated movie that I would highly recommend. Super cute :)
