Hey everyone!
Sorry there hasnt been a blog update in a while, we seriously havent had any time! Today we're taking it a bit more easy as we have been practically dead after partying for, sometimes, 20 hours of the day! Our personal journals are also taking a little breather, so its gonna be hard remembering everything but will give it a go!!
Just to begin with, for those who dont know, we're still in Botafogo, and not Lapa - where we were meant to be going - as we turned up last week, and found out that there had been a robbery at gunpoint in the hostel we were meant to be going to. So lucky that we hadnt booked a night earlier! Forensics and TV crews were all about, and tourist police were surrounding the building when we got there..was a little scary! But anyway, we felt that there was definitely no way that we were going to stay there as we didnt feel safe, so back at Sun Rio hostel, which is still as good as ever! We leave in a couple of days though and are heading to Ilha Grande, moving a little South of Brazil.
Carnival started on the 20th, so it has been non stop partying from then really. Seeing as weve done most of the touristy things in Rio that we want to do, weve made the most of the beach and the beers! We've been going to blocos in the street, which are street parties, and they are so good!! Theres so many people that come along, and everyone just has a good time and dances non-stop! Everyone makes an effort with costumes as well and theyre all different - two guys yesterday were dressed up as tampons! Niiiice! Theres a group of people in the hostel which weve become friends with, so we tend to go out in big groups which you parents will like to know!
A couple of nights ago, we went into Lapa, where we got a few beers and just partied on the streets, and these were accompagnied down by some nice hot dogs (one place around the corner sells them for 99 cents, which is about 30p - bargain! And they dont even make you ill which is always a plus!!) and churros! Churros are Alexs new favourite love.....they are like a long donut, covered in cinnamon and sugar, and filled with chocolate! Mmmm! Also loving this drink called Guarana so will have to be shipping some of that into Dartford when we get back home!! We got back from Lapa at about 6.30am, and had to be up for a bloco in Santa Teresa at 8.30am - was a struggle! We had to get the metro, half asleep, and walk up these really steep hills to get to the top in 40 degree heat, but it was so worth it!! :)
Last night we went to the Sambadrome, where all the parades happen and it was one of the best things weve ever seen! There are so many costumes - mustve taken forever! And the people just party forever - the whole parade ran from about 10pm til 6am, so they mustve been a little shattered by the end of it! From the hostel we were meant to be going to, we were meant to be getting free Sambadrome tickets with our stay, but even though we paid 50% as a deposit, we still didnt get it - the hostel manager was a bit of a weirdo about it. So anyway, we heard that you could just go outside and there would be people selling tickets, which there were - we haggled mighty finely, and got them down to 30 reals which is about a tenner! We didnt have amazing seats but still saw all the action and it was still such a great night! Therell be some photos of it on Facebook soon, so keep a look out! Lissies camera died though, but got most of the action! We havent brought out camera out to the blocos, because we were worried about losing it, but so wish we had - the pictures wouldve been wicked! Anyway today we had a nice lay in - til about 1.30pm (well deserved we feel!) - so up now, and ready for another day of partying!
Will try to do this more often after Carnival!
Hope everythings ok back at home
Miss you all
Lissie and Lexy
