Well, today we took 2 tours. The first, early in the morning, took us to the floating Uros islands in the middle of Titicaca lake. We were collected and taken to the harbour where we got a boat for about 30mins with a load of people who all turned out to be weirdos at some later stage.
The boat ride was fine and we got to take some good photos on Lisa´s phone because the battery in the camera ran out. We saw how the islanders make the floating islands and experienced the waves moving the islands up and down which I have to admit was pretty awesome.
We got some free time to wander around the island and look inside the houses that the islanders have built there. Everything is easily moved. The houses and the islands are all made from a reed called Totora which is very light but very strong. Each island has a president and if he doesn´t do his job well enough he and his family can be exiled from the island and have to put their reed house on a massive reed boat and sent packing. Later we travelled by a pretty fancy reed boat to another island where we just walked around for a bit.
We arrived back to the town and went for lunch before going on a tour of Chucuito. Chucuito is a small town about 20mins away by car. It is famous for having a fertility temple and good views of the Lago and a trout farm. The fertility temple has lots of phallic statues and not much else. Matthew got a picture hugging the biggest one but Lisa couldn´t be convinced.
We went to the town observatory and took some photos and walked around through the town square in which they were celebrating 3 weddings. Allegedly it´s very quiet but the 3 weddings were a huge occasion. We went to the trout farm and saw the different life stages of a trout and got to feed some of them. We asked what they eat but never really found out because the guide thought we were asking what to eat them with. He suggested french fries.
On the way back to the town we stopped by the reed museum. It was pretty good. One guy did everything and showed us how he made the boats that the Uros people use. he had little animals and birds and newspaper cuttings of him with his stuff. It was very interesting.
Back to Puno, dinner and an early night watching first season House on Universal Channel.
