Hey everyone,
Well, i´m sure you´re all just dying to know how Shakira was so thought i´d send a quick update. We went on Tuesday night and it was outdoor at a racing stadium. (So glad I was prepared as usual with my hoody!). Anyway, concerts in Peru seem pretty different. You get people walking around with boxes of Domino´s pizza´s and drinks and stuff for you to buy. You also get free snacks included with your ticket which was pretty cool.
Anyway, we waited ages for Shakira to come on but then sure enough, the lights went down and every single person there got up and stood ON their seat. Not just stood up but actually stood on their seats. We all found this quite funny for some reason. Then, the shorter people who couldn´t see just looked around for empty seats and stacked them up and stood on them. Anyway, considering I only know 3 Shakira songs and being in Latin America, she was obviously going to be speaking and singing in Spanish, Kirsty and I weren´t overly looking forward to it. Turns out though that we really enjoyed it and she was a really good performer. Even if my excitement when "Whenever Wherever" came on soon faded when she sang it in Spanish!!!! Still, Kirsty and I thought it would be amusing to sing along in English and add to the international flavour. Elise of course knew all the Spanish words - that girl can be so annoying!!! :-) Our hostel managed to get tickets to the aftershow party so we stayed up past our usual bedtime (10pm) and went to a bar in Miraflores. She didn´t show but we still had a good time.
Hip´s don´t lie was the last song (In English thank goodness) so we went suitably crazy to that and then spent an hour trying to get out of the place.....on foot!
The next morning, we caught a flight from Lima to Tumbes right in the North of Peru, practically on the border with Ecuador. Then a taxi to Mancora which is a gorgeous beach resort. White sandy beaches, clear blue sea and lots of surf...perfect. It´s a really surfy town and it was nice to chill out for the first time in ages. We spent our first night sitting on the beach, drinking Pina Colada´s and listening to Jack Johnson - that´s what a holiday should be like, not 11km hikes!!! :-)
So basically we´ve spent the last couple of days just chilling on the beach which has been needed. Tonight we flew back to Lima so I am now in Lima for the very last time. Stepped off the plane, collected my bags and checked them straight back in. I´m now waiting for my flight to Buenos Aires in about an hour or so. I´m meeting Claire at Buenos Aires Airport but I arrive at 6am and she arrives at 10:40am so i´ve just invested in the new John Grisham to keep me entertained. I also have a pack of cards so if I get really desperate, I can always play Solitaire. (The clue is in the name!) Looking forward to Buenos Aires as I kind of feel as though I have done Peru and i´ve heard lots of good things about BA. Was very sad leaving Kirsty and Elise though, especially seeing as i´ve spent the whole month with Kirsty. They fly back to England tomorrow.
Oh, one mini story from the plane. The plane had 3 seats on each side, just a normal 737, anyway, there was a woman and 2 men sat the row in front of us and across the aisle. We suddenly heard a bit of a commotion and looked round and a liquid substance was dripping onto the poor mans head from the luggage locker overhead. Well, of course we got the giggles. The air stewards come rushing up, one smells it, licks it and announces that it is honey. Meanwhile, the poor man is still being covered in the stuff. They close the jar back and then jam a load of kitchen roll into the locker where it closes. The man is still wiping his head down and the woman is looking kind of sheepish in the corner - hee hee. I´m trying not to choke on my lemonade and then, some guy from the back comes up with his video camera and starts recording it! Strange the lengths people will go to for entertainment in this country.
Well - i´d better shoot as Claire will kill me if I miss my flight and am not there to meet her. Hopefully, the updates from Argentina and Brazil will be a bit shorter. They will probably read something like....woke up, went to the beach, went to bed! :-)
Hope you´re all OK at home, missing you all lots.
Lisa
