Hi Everyone,
Sorry for the very short journal entry the other day but I was sooo tired. Well, lots to fill you in on!!! First of all, one thing that I kind of "missed off" my other entry.
Flight was Ok although from London to Atlanta was sat next to THE most boring man EVER. The whole 9 hrs and 30 minutes, all he said to me was "excuse me, can I get to the restroom please" and "no" when I asked if he had a pen so I could fill in my landing card! Anyway, got to Atlanta OK and just made the connection. Now anyone who has ever been on holiday with me knows I have a morbid fear of luggage conveyer belts. 2 reasons, I always think that a) my bag won´t appear and will have been lost or even worse b) My bag will have split open and there will be knickers all over the conveyer belt. Well one of my fears was realised. "Which one I hear you cry". Well, after waiting for an hour, the belt finally stopped and my bag wasn´t there. By this time, it was 1am and i´d had 3 hours sleep in 48 hours. I think you´d all have been proud of me for resisting the overwhelming urge I had to sit in the middle of the floor and cry. Instead I was quite calm and even managed to practice my Spanish. (Well, I said Gracias when the man gave me a form to fill out - does that count?!) There were about 5 other people in the same situation which made me feel SLIGHTLY better. Eventually managed to get out and Kirsty was still there, amazingly, so was the transfer man who had been waiting 2 hours. He was so sweet and took me up to the Delta office to make sure i´d been given all of the correct paperwork. He then took us to the car telling us to put all our stuff in the boot as sometimes, people throw stones and the taxi´s and try to steal stuff - argh!!
Made it safely though. Arrived at the hostel and Kirsty kindly leant me some clothes to sleep in. Thanks mum for making me stuff those extra clothes in my hand luggage!!! Got up and managed to find Gemma and Lisa who had arrived the day before. Hugs all round and they were suitably sympathetic to my luggage situation. The luggage situation also meant waiting in Lima an extra day which Gemma and Lisa were disappointed about as they´d been bored the day before but the lovely taxi man (Julio) had pointed out a nice shopping area on the way from the airport so we got a taxi to there. It was actually really nice, lots of posh shops and eating places. We decided to have lunch and found a gorgeous restaurant overlooking the beach and sea. (The sea looked decidedly prettier from way up there then it did when standing on the beach!) Anyway, to cut a long story short, 4 hours, lots of food, a bottle of champagne and a cocktail or 2 later, we left. Yes, I know that is not normal backpacking behaviour however, I was suffering from Post traumatic stress following the luggage incident. To further combat the stress, we decided to go to the JW Marriott across the road and have massages. Ha ha, we are the worst back packers EVER!!!! Was very nice though and we each spent around 30 quid in total.
When we got back, the jet lag was really kicking in so we didn´t do much. The lads in our hostal thought it was hilarious that we´d had champagne and massages but then I reminded them about my post traumatic stress and they agreed that it really was quite a normal thing to do under the circumstances. Went to bed about 9.30 as we were all so shattered.
Woke up to find my luggage had arrived - YEY!! I´d never been so excited to see a backpack. We booked train tickets but had to wait for them to be delivered to the hotel so spent the morning sunbathing in the garden - very taxing but of course, all part of the therapy for the Post traumatic stress. Then we had our first bus journey - only 5 hours fortunately to Ica. Then a taxi to Huaccacina which is where we are now. It is really weird. A little Oasis with lovely hotels and restaurants and a lagoon all surrounded by HUGE sand dunes. We are off sandboarding in a few minutes. Slightly scary as the dunes are absoloutely massive.
Where we are staying now is gorgeous. Has a lovely pool and is about 8 quid a night - perfect. Thanks for all your emails etc, will add pictures soon. Will update you all soon if I survive the sand dunes.
