Thursday 23 November
We got the ferry from Phuket to Ko Phi-Phi Don. When we arrived it looked like paradise with its turquoise crystal clear water, white sands and palm trees. However we then walked into what is known as the 'tourist village' where we were staying and found that it is no secret as it is packed with backpackers. It seems to have recovered well from the tsunami (it was one of the worst hit places), but they are still building to pack more tourists in. We had a walk around, visited the waste water treatment plant (not as bad as it sounds, actually very pretty reed beds with lots of flowers attracting all sorts of butterflies), the Tsunami Memorial Garden (sad to read all the names of people who had died but a nice place to remember them), then sat on the Aolo Dalam Beach for a few hours.
Friday 24 November
We chartered a longtail boat with Carrie, Ray, Miriam & Jo and did a bit of island hopping. We sailed around to Ko Phi-Phi Leh, a separate island smaller than Ko Phi-Phi Don and not built on at all. Lisa, Ray & Carrie did some snorkelling in one of the bays - lots of beautifully coloured fish in the clear blue water. Ray took some photos with his underwater camera so we may hopefully be able to put some of those pictures on later. Our last stop Maya Bay, a lagoon that was used when filming 'The Beach'. Ed pretended to be Leonardo DiCaprio or whatever he is called! We chilled out there for a bit, Lisa and the others did a bit more snorkelling and saw some huge sea slugs - yuk! We then got the boat back to Long Beach on Ko Phi-Phi Don, had some food and got drunk (yes, they are very bad influences on us still!). We had our first red wine since leaving the UK!
