Arrived in Shanghai late morning, taxi ride to the hotel then an orientation walk of the city. Ying (our tour leader) took us to a local cafe for lunch where we had deep fried dumplings and chicken noodles - yum. We went for a walk on 'The Bund' the waterfront area of Shanghai, had a coffee then a very expensive beer at a German pub. Shanghai by night looks quite space-age as there are lots of skyscrapers and a strange tv tower which have neon bright flashing lights on them.

Went to the Yu Yuan Gardens, a collection of rockeries and pavillions in the middle of a tacky tourist area. Later we went up the Jinmao Tower, the fourth highest building in the world. The observation deck is on the 88th floor where we got great views of Shanghai (although it was a bit hazy) and could also see down inside the tower to the lobby of the hotel which takes up floors 53 - 87 of the tower. In the evening we went on a boat trip on the Huangpu River - good views of The Bund and the rest of the city all lit up.

Had a quiet day, just went to The People's Park, a quiet haven in the middle of the busy city. We then set off on the 26 hour train journey to Yangshou.
