Flores 1
Crossed the Guatamala border with relative ease - no horrible questions to answer like in Belize. A bit scared at first in Guatemala because of all the horror stories we had heard, but in fact it turned out to be OK. Jumped into a minibus that was going to our desitnation, Flores. It filled up quickly to maximum capacity, however this didn´t seem to stop the driver encouraging more and more people to cram in. It was like a world record attempt! The road to Flores was very muddy and the van had to keep swerving to avoid huge mud puddles.
We arrived at Flores, a small island in the middle of a lake connected by a Bridge. It is a sleepy little town with lots of hotels and quaint cobbled streets and not much to do. We checked into our hotel and wandered around, discovering a huge Christmas tree in the central park that was very gaudy. On closer inspection, it turned out to be sponsored by a beer company and instead of a star at the top of the tree, there was instead the beer company symbol. Ha ha.
While at the hotel, our alarm clock tragically impacted with the floor and was smashed to smitherines, so we ventured to the nearby town of Santa Elena to buy another one. It was very rough and we decided we much preferred it to Flores. Charlie confused an "F" symbol in a supermarket for an arrow pointing up a flight of stairs, which led to much confusion of staff as we arrived in their warehouse looking bemused.
From here we headed on to Tikal to see more Mayan Ruins.
