I arrived in Ayutthaya yesterday in the morning. On the way to my guest house the van driver stopped at all the temples so we could take photos & have a quick tour. Our tour guide was hilarious. He was this old thai man who had this mole on his chin with about 5 inches of hair growing out of it. The rest he'd shaved off. He was explaining about the main religon in Thailand which is Budhism. It's not budhism in the main sense though - it's halfway between budhism & Hinduism. Not only that but they choose which rules to follow. For example normal budhists are not allowed to drink alcohol or eat meat but thais do. This doesn't mean that they don't take their religon seriously though.
By lunch time we'd covered all the main sights - Ayutthaya is a very small place & I'm here for 3 days! I was gutted. Nobody speaks English & there's nothing to do. All the other people I met in the guest house are only here for 1 night. I don't know why I'm here for 3 but the bus doesn't come to pick me up til Weds so I'm stuck. I was planning to go back on myself & catch the train to Bangkok & shop for the day but the train was delayed so i didn't. BUT anyway then I met an Australian girl, Michelle who showed me some hidden gems that aren't in the guide book.
So I went out exploring & had a fantastic time. I'm pretty sure I'm the only English person in Ayutthaya & I'm also sure that some people here have never even seen an English person before. It's really funny the way they react to you. Most get really excited & they come & talk to you to practice what English they know (which is usually just hello), some just stare but everyone is really friendly. I've been communicating by sign language - but it works. I've also learned some basic Thai - just hello & thank you & you always bow your head - & they really appreciate you trying.
Michelle is going to Lopburi tomorrow - an ancient city that is over-run with monkeys. They are a real pest to the locals but they can't kill them because they are supposed to be the re-incarnated children of a late king. So funny. I may go with her just for the day but I have to be back here for my bus & I can't miss it.
I was in a thai restaraunt last night & they started doing kareoke. Then the owner of the bar came down & personally asked me to sing a song as her customers would love it. I declined saying that I was rubbish but I may go back & do a redition of Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love for them before I leave (T&H girls would know what I'm on about). It would probably put them off English forever ha ha!
Anyway I'll keep you posted!
