THE BLOG I WAS TOO DRUNK TO WRITE:
Kawaramachi, Kyoto, Japan.
October 26th, 2013, 2:19am.
Well... I tried to start typing this blog and just failed miserably. So I'm going for my second attempt:
I woke up really late some reason. We had spent most of our night socializing with our new friends from the hostel. Their names are:
The two twins: Denise (Dee) and Sandy.
The Asian Australian: Andi.
The Canadian working at this hostel: Barry.
The guy from Portland: Dylan.
The guy from Sweden: Albin.
We chatted for a long time. They were drinking, but of course, Real and I didn't have any. We both hate beer, and beer was all they had. They promised to take us out the next night to make up for it though!
After we woke up, we headed out for lunch and to walk around the near by market/shopping area. It was so fun! There were so many stores! I bought some cool pants for myself, and some souvenirs for family. We even walked through a food market. There were fish heads everywhere! Everything from big massive fish to teeny tiny fish that are no bigger than your eyelash. However, you can still see the eyes on them. Yuck. Actually, we ate some at Miyuki's restaurant in Chinzan-so, and at Noriko's house when she made us dinner! I forgot to mention- at Noriko's house, we learned that it isn't rude to slurp your noodles, but it is rude to sing at the dinner table. Humpf.
Walking through the fish market, millions of different scents tickled my nose. Seriously it was such a strange combination of goods being sold, I could barely figure out what my nose was smelling. There was the obvious fish smell, of course... Which at some points, had me gagging. But in between all the nasty shops, there were candy stores and bread stores. So every once in a while, my senses got a break! I could smell the sweet scent of cookies or candy being made- or the warming smell of bread! I think I even smelled some popcorn somewhere along the line too! BUT! Be warned, because fish and popcorn together make the most disgusting smell I believe I've ever experienced.
Happy to be out of the fish market section, we continued along. Real hated it, but I loved it! I actually ended up going back for another round after he was done.
We made it back to the hostel to meet our new group of friends. Barry, since he knows a lot about this area, took us to an all you can eat and an all you can eat restaurant! It was so delicious! Seriously, the all you can eat was strictly meat. No veggies whatsoever! Right up my alley. It was bacon, beef, intestine (ew), hot dogs, rice, and curry! The all you can drink bar was a dangerous sight though. Barry described it as being a little kid in a candy shop. There were tons of different liquor and fillings. They had my favourite- liquor and lime! Which soon became our table's fav. Real had 2 cokes with alcohol in it... I'm not even sure what kind of alcohol it was he had. Whatever it was, he was sprawled out on the bench half-dead in seconds! I even drank more than him!!! Silly non-drinking Asian. Oh well. Albin took good care of him for me! That included convincing him not to go "night life" exploring on his own.
We all finished up at the restaurant, and headed to the nearest karaoke bar. We spent close to 2 hours there! It was awesome! I even got to rap to "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminen and Rihanna! Yeeeehaw! After a couple waters, we went back to the hostel where I came up to our room and wrote the previous blog.
I think it had all of 7 words in it... Yeaaaaah, sorry about that. I was too tired to think straight. But at least we had fun! Right, uncle Real? Hahahaha poor guy felt sick the whole night. He belted to "A Whole New World" and "Yellow Submarine" pretty well, though. Oh and "Bohemian Rhapsody."
It was a bonding experience for us for sure! He's going to have to admit I was right, though. You know, when I told everyone I was going to have to babysit him. Hahaha I definitely didn't expect it to be like that, though! Wheew!
Love always,
Lindsay Lehr
