FINDING OUR ROOTS:
Kiyone, Japan.
October 21st, 2013, 8:06pm.
Hi again! Last blog for the night- After our adventure at the castle, we went North to a small village/town called Kiyone. This is apparently where the "Eguchis" came from! Eguchi is my Mom's Mom's family maiden name. Her grandfather apparently owned all the land in Kiyone. Somewhere down the line, the wealth that they had was lost. No one knows how or why, so Real and I ventured off into the non-English speaking land and tried to find some answers. We looked for a while, trying to find a cemetery where some "Eguchis" could be buried. Of course, nothing is written in Romanji, (that's Japanese in English phonetics) and everything was in Japanese characters of Kanji. We had a rough idea on paper of what "Eguchi" looked like in Kanji, but it was nearly impossible to tell. The old gravestones were already tough to read as is, let alone for someone who has no idea how to read Japanese writing! Oh well, we took some pictures anyways. We later found a police officer who took us into his office and tried to help us figure it out. He spoke a sliver of English, so we spent quite a while trying to figure out everything. By that time, it was 6:30pm, and the whole area had fallen under darkness. We sort of gave up at that point, and made our way back to Kurashiki, where our hotel is located.
All in all, we had a pretty eventful day, considering that the actual place we wanted to go to was closed! But since we've been up since 5, I'm pooped! I think I better take a shower and head to bed!
I'm sorry my blogs have been so short today! Fatigue has gotten to both of us today.
Love always,
Lindsay Lehr
