BREAKFAST AT THE MONTEREY AKASAKA:
Akasaka-Mitsuke, Tokyo, Japan.
October 10th, 2013, 9:23am.
Well... Our first breakfast in Japan turned out to be a huge embarrassment. Imagine, waking up for a lovely morning run. You get your sports bra on, your sleeveless running shirt, your nike short shorts, and your runners. You look good for exercising and stuff, right? Now imagine walking into a wedding hall, filled with people wearing business clothes, suits, dresses, and having really proper and elegant people serving you food. Well that's what just happened to us. Uncle Real even had his Nike hat. AND socks and sandals! First thing I say to him is "Uncle Real- We are soooo underdressed!" He says, "Yeah! I feel like a slob!" (He was quoting his daughter Marlise as she said that's exactly how we'd feel all throughout Japan. My Uncle says, well, you better get used to it!
Honestly it was the most uncomfortable feeling in the world. Not only because I felt like people were judging me, but because I felt like I was being extremely disrespectful to the Chefs, the servers, and even the other diners. Who were praying after they were finished. I looked around and paid really close attention to how everyone was sitting, eating, and placing their dishes after they ate. I tried a bunch of different things. I tried bacon, of course. It was really gross. Just like people said it would be. And I tried pumpkin soup. Which tasted like hamburger soup. I had rice and orange juice... It's all just very strange. I loved watching the Japanese people use their chopsticks, though. They make it look so easy, and kind of pretty to eat. Listen to me, I'm so creepy. "Ooh I loved watching them." Uhg. Maybe I should try and find an ediquette class.
I placed my dishes really nice after my meal, and then there's Uncle Real. He kinda just left anything where ever it was. Oh well. Off to our next adventure! I better go buy nicer clothes while where there.....
Love always,
Lindsay Lehr

shirley aiken Keep them coming, Linds, we enjoyed reading this. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first to feel underdressed especially not knowing what the occasion was. xo
Barbara Eguchi Nice - now that is my man......you should see his room the way he left it! It is good Lindsay that you are observing what is happening around you and also challenging yourself with the food. Great idea about the blog by the way. Cheers - enjoy!
Kari Lehr I agree Barb- great to see you observing and learning; not creepy at all! Ask lots of questions! Have you had any situations where the Japanese are surprised that you don't speak Japanese? Or is it pretty obvious that you two aren't natives?
Lindsay Rae Lehr Ive had one experience so far, and he just thought we spoke Japanese because we look it, but he was fluent in English too, which was good. They seem to be more surprised that Real doesnt speak it...
