Good news, I've finally found myself a job! Instead of having job interviews here, they'll have you come in and do a trial where you basically just work for a couple of hours so they can see how well you do. I had two trials last week, one at a place called the Pier Bar and another at Rattle & Hum Bar and Grill. I showed up to the Pier Bar trial and found out that the job wasn't actually serving as I previously thought, but bartending - I've never done it my life! Being the big drinker I am, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and I hadn't even heard of half the drinks I was expected to make. Needless to say, after my trial I wasn't really expecting to get a call back. I didn't. The second trial went much better, and after two hours of work I was told that I had the job. I basically take drink orders and serve for 3-4 shifts a week and it's actually a lot of fun. The people I'm working with are great, they're all young and most are British or American travellers.
Last Friday Cam and I went to the local 'Show' which is a sort of fair/exhibition with rides, carnival games, livestock shows, etc. It actually reminded me a lot of the Stampede albeit a much smaller version and without the good things like live music and bull-riding. We managed to get in for free (the woman at the gate said she was feeling generous) which was helpful as everything was really overpriced. They have something here called Show Bags. Basically, you pay exorbitant amounts of money for a themed plastic bag filled with lollies and other goodies. They had all kinds of themes like Hannah Montana, Disney, Cadbury, Pirates, you name it. Kids seemed pretty excited over them and I felt pretty bad for their parents because a lot of the show bags were over $20! Yikes. If you come to Cairns, I think this show is probably something I wouldn't go out of my way to see.
City Council puts on free exercise and swim classes on the Cairns Esplanade throughout the week (the Esplanade is a touristy area by the ocean in downtown Cairns) which I think is really cool. I convinced Cam to try Boxercise with me on the weekend. Surprisingly there were a lot of people there considering it was 8am on a Saturday morning. The class was really intense - definitely a good workout. I'm going to try some of the other classes this week. I think tonight there's a Boot Camp class on!
On Sunday we drove up to Palm Cove (about 20mins north of Cairns). It has a gorgeous beach and a lot of cafes and hotels. It's definitely a tourist spot and I can see why. I'd love to go back there soon if the weather gets a bit warmer.
