Hello everyone!
Simon Bolivar here!! After a thoroughly relaxing time around Porto Seguro, we have now ventured deeper into the cultural heart of Brazil and to Brazil's first capital, Salvador. This city was once an extremely popular destination for slaves(!), most of whom came all the way from Africa to experience hard labour, torture and frequent beatings, some until death. Thankfully that all finished years ago, and now where they used to sell and flog the slaves, the descendants of the slaves play music and dance the nights away. The square where we are staying is called Largo do Pelourinho which means 'Whipping Post'; you've guessed it - that's what they used to do here to the slaves. The area around the square is also named Pelourinho and is the oldest part of Salvador - old cobbled streets and pastel coloured colonial buildings on every street. There are no cars here on the streets but it's far from peaceful as this is one of Brazil's richest areas for music and dance, all heavily influenced by the descendants of the slaves from Africa. The music is a mix of bongos, drums, guitars and trumpets! And other instruments I've no idea the names of!
Anyway we've had a great time mixing with the locals, dancing and drinking and tasting the local cuisine!
We've found out how to eat cheaply and well and have just started to live within our budget!!
Anyway, you'd better get off this page and go and do some work!! We've got some sunbathing to do and cocktails to drink!!
Adios xxx
