Hi there!
Today's our last day in Rio after a week here, so today the travelling starts in earnest! We're getting a bus this evening to Porto Seguro (just inside the region of Bahia), on the coast north of Rio and about half way between Rio and Salvador... It's going to take us about 18 hours and by the end of it we'll have covered only a small piece of the Brazilian coast...!
Rio's been excellent, mostly in that it's been our first opportunity to start 'getting into things', and we're still only at the very beginning. People watching, walking through the streets, sitting outside cafés drinking caipirinhas (sugar cane rum, limes and sugar cocktails) and chopp (lager), taking the buses and strolling along Copacabana and Ipanema beaches watching people playing volleyball and football (and they are GOOD!) have all made it - and it's none of it been anywhere near as scary as I thought!! Everyone's so friendly and there's none of the intimidation that you find in some places. We've loved it.
It is a fantastic city to look over from Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado with Christ at the top - all the buildings running like rivers between the hills to the sea. (We'll put some photos up when we get to faster internet access to download them. We've not got the camera out a huge amount here, but we did for the views...)
Just need to sort the budget out, as we seem to have carried on as though in the South of France, and not held back from enjoying the fish and meat in the good restaurants!! At this rate we'll be back at Christmas! At some point we'll have to join the masses in the dorms, too. Mellow Yellow hostel has been 'interesting', clearly for the much younger than us! People wanting to sleep seem to have to revolve around the hours of the bar rather than the other way round and the music doesn't stop between 9am and midnight! We won't miss it (grumpy old thirty something person!) and look forward to having a window that looks over something more interesting and with more natural light than the pool room....! Anyway, probably gone on a bit long, and realise I won't be able to keep this up every stop, or that you'll want to read it...! Bye loves... Hope you're all really well. We miss you A LOT. Talk to you soon xxx
P.S. Failed to mention our big highlight of the week (a must for anyone reading for ideas on what to do in Rio...). On Friday night we ventured to the district of Lapa - THE place to go for live Brazilian music - and to a venue called 'Rio Scenarium'- they have a website. It was incredible and we'd never ever been anywhere like it. The live Brazilian band and atmosphere were just fantastic and it'll not be an evening we forget in a hurry! (Of course, unable to cope with the pace and late nights, yours truly fell asleep despite the fantastic entertainment and let poor Simon down by being unable to make it to the end of the evening!)
