I'm sitting for the last time at the computer in this lovely pousada (guesthouse). I wonder if we'll stay anywhere as nice as this any time soon... The people who work here have been so welcoming, and there is such a relaxed (largely "hippy") vibe throughout the entire village of Arraial d'Ajuda. The need to have at least a little Portuguese has become apparent, and so the phrasebook's been coming out quite a bit. I do get frustrated that my conversation with people is limited... Understanding is particularly difficult because of the pronunciation.
We've done relatively little here - after the sightseeing of Rio - other than strolling and strolling some more and sitting in cafés and the odd bit of swimming in the pool here and in the sea. It's been a great place for all that...
One excellent find here has been 'A Portinha', a buffet type restaurant selling food by the kilo - all homemade food including delicious meats, fish, quiche, salads, mashed squash... and then all the cakes afterwards! Hmmm... What was that about weight supposedly dropping off me when I'd start travelling?! Anyway, we'll pay the place one last visit this afternoon on the way to the airport!
The Caipirinha cocktails have been going down well although being made up of sugar cane rum as the only liquid ingredient (with limes and sugar), they do knock you out! Still, it's important to try the local 'cuisine', is it not?! As we sat indulging last night, Simon was approached by two little lads doing card tricks. The ones who show real initiative to earn a few reais (the Brazilian currency) always win us over, especially Simon...
Racking my brains trying to think of a funny story... I think I'll have to move over and give Simon a go next time. It'll be a better read than my drivel!
Next stop Salvador...
