Limuru Chilren's Centre aka LCC!
It's the second day at LCC and it feels like I've known one of the staff there, Abbey for quite a while.
For the next few days she teaches us how to prepare and cook the children's lunch - We make Ugali (maize flour cooked with water to a dough-like consistency), Githeri (beans and corns) and Rice with Vegetables.
At lunch time they say a prayer then eat their lunch with their hands.
I'm amazed by a little girl called Belinda who is very switched on. The staff are not sure exactly how old she is but they think she's 5 (she looks younger though). Belinda is too young to go to school so she hangs out at LCC during the day. She loves cleaning duties - sweeping the floor and trying to be as helpful as possible! You don't see kids this helpful at that age! It makes me happy that she's in safe hands now as her parents were abusive to her and currently in jail.
The kids are back for their lunch and the camera is out - once you take a photo of a a kid the rest of them want a photo!! I catch a kid putting his hands through the window from outside asking for more beans - the other kid happily gives him his leftovers from his plate.
We hold a little party for the kids that live at LCC on the last day we're there - muffins, popcorn, biscuits and cordial is on the menu!
