So I guess it is time for an update, life here has been fairly hectic lately with the Olympics. There are many visitors now and our little village is heaving and there has been a lot going on. Each night there is a band playing in the village square which has been fun seeing, I especially enjoyed seeing the Bare Naked Ladies who I managed to get a few videos of when they played. I've been pretty busy last week was Ashleigh's birthday which went well in the evening she had a masquerave party where we had to wear masks for (I uploaded the pictures up), I made a mask which came out well. The next day we all chipped in to rent a board for her to rent a snowboard for the day and we all went out and tried snowboarding. It was hard at first but very fun once I managed to get the hang of it. I am also strange as my stance on the board is regular but I turn goofy so I am a mix match which works out quite well for me but confused Richy and Tim who were helping to teach us.
We've gone to the village a lot in the evening most nights enjoying the events but I've yet to get on tv sadly :( hehe. The torch celebration was very good, we were quite close to the stage so got to see a lot of it, I managed to get hold of the glowing coke bottles they were giving out and we waved our mittens and coke bottles when the torch arrived. I did take a video of it but I accidentally deleted it from my camera which was a shame. But I posted up the pictures I managed to get from the celebration, sadly I didn't get to see the torch up close but Nikki and a few others who didn't manage to get by the stage managed to hold the torch when the runners went by which was cool. The opening ceremony for the Olympics was much the same, a lot was happening in the village so we went down and to the square and watched the local athletes and some local musicians for Whistlers personal opening ceremony. Once that had finished they changed the big screens to show Vancouver's official ceremony and we stayed and watched that.
My Olympic job with BTS has been keeping me very busy each day, at first I had some long 12 hour shifts with them, helping them to set up the food tents where I now work, and fortunately my boss' are very nice, Nick and Greg. I work in concession tent 1 but we're getting moved to concession 3 on Tuesday which will be more busy which I am looking forward to as our tent is more quiet then the others. We get to take food home which is good and we also get to watch the Downhill, GS and other ski races that happen at Creekside so working there has a lot of benefits. I'm working with two of my Oyster group which is good and also a Canadian girl Nandani. There is also a bit of an obsession occurring at the whole Olympics as everyone is collecting and swapping pins. We've all been trying to beat each other by getting the most pins from people, I really want the dog sledge pin and a Mountie pin but they are hard to get hold of, but hopefully I will be able to swap some of my current pins to get them.
I also applied for a job within the Parallel Olympics yesterday and got a call today saying that they will e-mail me job information tomorrow, so this is good news. It is with Vanoc instead of BTS which means I will (with luck) get the Olympic Blue Jacket which is great, it is volunteer work though but I don't really mind that. I will have to visit SkiSchool and tell them tomorrow to make sure that I can get the time off.
We got a day off a few days ago and managed to go out skiing as a big group which was nice, we all went up around 11 and went to the terrain park where some of us tried jumps. I managed a really impressive fall after watching Tim and Nikki go over a jump and seeing them land straight away I followed up after them but with a bit more speed and ended up flying over a ledge and landing in a pile, thankfully the snow was soft so I didn't end up hurt, Ashleigh was snowboarding again so we were helping her. Tomorrow we plan to go out and I want to try snowboarding again so will see what it is like on the main mountain, I can see a lot of falling over happening so I will bring my helmet!
At the moment a few of us are watching the Ice Hockey, it is Canada vs USA and is a good match but unfortunately USA is winning at the moment. We've all been watching the events on TV when we can as not many of us managed to get tickets to any of the events. But it is going well. That's about it for now. :)
