So for our 5 hour journey to Mount Ruapehu (or should i say the Moody-Spitting-Mountain), we got a book-on-tape to listen in the car - "The Phantom of Manhattan". Its the sequel to Phantom of the Opera. Very gripping! [At this stage of the story i should mention that in between hearing " Pierre!-Where-did-you-get-that-toy-monkey?!" the car was making a horrible clak-clak sound that had Mel and I cringe in fear]. My first glimpse of (the then) snow-capped Mount Ruapehu sent thrills of excitement down my spine and I couldn't actually wait for Monday morning to arrive when i was gonna have my first ski-lesson!
And so the next morning we made the short journey up the mountain and, once again, in between "Christine-I-know-that-Pierre-is-my-son" we heard the cringing clak-clak sounds which became so bad that we had to leave the car half way up the mountain at a garage and catch a lift up to the slopes. (Duh, obviously skiing comes first. Worry about getting home later!). When ski-time was over, we walked back to the car and after dropping the boys at the hotel, Mel and I drove about 40 kms to the nearest mechanic to fix the stupid thing. After a small assessment all we got from the mechanic was " dunno, how you managed to drive this far without ceasing the engine". So that was that and a couple of minutes later we found ourselves hitch-hiking as we had no way of getting back to the hotel! After numerous cars passed without anybody stopping (ok, so maybe we looked a bit dodge in our ski-gear with gloves and beanies - it only snows right on top of the mountain and we're about 50ks away!), we popped into the nearest hotel where they phoned our hotel to come and fetch us. So we were carless (and story-less) and for the rest of the holiday we caught the shuttle up the mountain.
To cut a long story short, we left a day early (because of the eruption), fetched our fixed car and started our journey home (and this time "Christine-I-have-loved-you-all-my-life" had no background clak-clak sounds). We stopped at Puzzle World where we all went through a maze (which gave me a headache and a nose bleed cause i got SO LOST, but still loved every minute of it!), then we popped by The Luge in Rotorua. Its like a go-cart thingie that you sit in and it goes flipping fast down a hill (ok i'm explaining like my a$$ but it very late, had a long day - was at church most of the day attending a conference, and this mail is just getting too long now!).
